Sliding Door Hardware and Locks That Improve Security

Here are a few simple products that you can buy at your local hardware store, for under $20, that will increase the security of the sliding doors in your home or office. The first type of products are small locking pins that can be installed in the sliding door, or beside the door to block the door from moving. Two variation of this type of lock are made by CLR and Prime-Line.

The CRL Patio Door Security latch and the Prime-Line sliding door twist-in lock (Model: 55644) can both be surface mounted. The CRL Patio Door Security latch strike can be side or face mounted and mounted onto the patio door rail to act as a secondary security lock. It can be used on either single or double sliding doors. One latch and strike with installation screws are included in each package. (both of these types of locks should be used as a secondary security measure.)

If you want a second small latch, like the one that comes on the door already, you can install a "Mitey-Lok" Patio Door Lock that has a 5/8 inch (15.9 millimeter) thick, case hardened, steel bolt that locks the patio door in either a closed or ventilating position. The bolt prevents prying or lifting of door out of its track. You get one lock and screws per package.

The ones I like the most are a variation on the old stick in the window theme that we all used when growing up, except that this version is way sturdier. The new window bars are actually attached to the window, or door, frame and then attached to the window or door so that you can lock them open in any position you want.

Smith and Wesson make an, easy to install, sliding door locking bar that makes it so you can have your door or window open, and still be secure. With the Smith and Wesson Sliding Door and Window Lock, you can open sliding glass doors and windows just enough for ventilation but keep them secure. This clever device can adjust to different sizes (from 28" up to 54") so you can open your door or window enough to allow air in while keeping children inside from getting out or burglars from getting in. Also includes a safety block which can help prevent removal of the door or window.
